Today's square image features a large rock. Instead of revealing all of it, I have cropped the image and balanced the composition with a series of smaller rocks.

Tomorrow I will begin posting a series of random photos from my collection that I have taken over the years.

THE SQUARE Part 1.

A square artwork is a very difficult proposition in which to obtain a balanced composition. Getting the balance 'right' involves having a harmonious design with a focal point. The same applies in photography.

Today's photo was taken at Binalong Bay, on Tasmania's East Coast.

The composition can be divided into layers, with the focal point (subject) being a single, large rock just off-centre.

The 'symmetry' of a square is the hardest thing to overcome when planning a photo's composition. Remember not to think in symmetrical terms when working with a square!
